Have you registered to vote in North Carolina? You can check your voter registration status here. There are two primary ways to register to vote in North Carolina: fill out the North Carolina Voter Registration Application and mail it to your county’s board of election office, or submit a voter registration application online through the DMV. There are a variety of other voter registration tools available for the Duke community, including TurboVote and You Can Vote.
The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina is October 9th. Same-day registration is also available at early voting locations from October 15th through October 31st. To register at a polling location during the early voting period, you must complete a North Carolina Voter Registration Application as well as show an identifying document such as a NC driver’s license or photo ID from a government agency with your name and current address, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck with your name and current address, or a current college/university photo identification card paired with proof of campus habitation.
Vote by Mail, Early Voting and Election Day
To vote by mail, registered voters may request a ballot through the online Absentee Ballot Request Portal, or fill out a North Carolina Absentee Ballot Request Form and return it to your county’s board of elections office. If you vote by mail, you can now track your ballot in the mail through the state’s new BallotTrax portal. For the 2020 election, the North Carolina State Board of Elections recommends that mailed-in absentee ballots be mailed by October 27th.
The early voting period is open from October 15th through October 31st. At Duke University, the Karsh Alumni and Visitors Center will be available as a one-stop early voting site for all Duke students and employees currently working on campus. You may also cast a ballot at any early voting site in your county. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. You may vote on Election Day at your assigned polling place in your county.
